The Araucaria plant, most commonly Norfolk Island Pine, is a popular ornamental evergreen known for its neat, symmetrical shape and soft, feathery branches.

Basic Information

  • Scientific name: Araucaria heterophylla
  • Family: Araucariaceae
  • Native to: Norfolk Island in the Pacific Ocean
  • Growth habit: Slow-growing indoors; can grow into a large tree outdoors in suitable climates.

Care Guide

🌞 Light

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal.
  • Rotate the pot periodically so all sides receive light evenly.

💧 Water

  • Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry.
  • Keep soil slightly moist but not soggy.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Prefers 15–25°C.
  • Avoid cold drafts, air conditioners, and temperatures below 10°C.

💦 Humidity

  • Likes moderate to high humidity.
  • Occasional misting can help in dry indoor environments.

🪴 Soil

  • Well-draining potting mix with good aeration.
  • A mix containing peat, coco peat, and perlite works well.

🌱 Fertilizer

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.

Common Problems

  • Yellowing branches: Often caused by overwatering.
  • Brown tips: Usually due to low humidity or underwatering.
  • Drooping branches: Can result from insufficient light or root stress.

In India

Araucaria grows well in many parts of India as a decorative indoor or garden plant. In warm, humid areas such as parts of Maharashtra, it can thrive if protected from harsh afternoon sun and waterlogged soil.

If you have an Araucaria plant and want advice on a specific issue (yellow leaves, pruning, repotting, placement, etc.), tell me what’s happening or share a photo.
