Chamaedorea is a group of tropical palms native to Central America, best known for being easy-care indoor houseplants. The most popular species you’ll usually see sold is Chamaedorea elegans, often called the Parlor Palm.

What it looks like

Chamaedorea plants are small, graceful palms with thin green stems and feathery, arching leaves. They stay relatively compact indoors, which is why they’re popular for homes and offices.

Basic care (indoors)

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light
  • Tolerates low light better than many plants
  • Avoid direct harsh sun (it can scorch leaves)

Watering

  • Keep soil lightly moist, but not soggy
  • Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry
  • Overwatering is the most common problem (can cause root rot)

Humidity

  • Likes moderate to high humidity
  • Does fine in normal indoor air, but appreciates occasional misting in dry rooms

Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–27°C
  • Keep away from cold drafts or AC blasts

Soil

  • Well-draining potting mix (peat/coir + perlite works well)
  • Good drainage in the pot is essential

Fertilizer

  • Light feeding once a month during spring and summer
  • No need to fertilize in winter

Common problems

  • Yellow leaves: often overwatering
  • Brown tips: dry air or underwatering
  • Drooping: inconsistent watering or root stress
  • Spider mites: can appear in dry indoor conditions

Why people like it

  • Very low-maintenance compared to other palms
  • Safe for indoor spaces with lower light
  • Adds a soft tropical look without growing too large

If you want, I can also suggest where to place it in your home or help you revive a struggling plant.
