The Monstera plant usually refers to Monstera deliciosa, a very popular indoor foliage plant known for its large glossy leaves and natural “split” or hole patterns.
🌿 What it is
Monstera deliciosa is a tropical climbing plant native to Central America. It’s widely grown indoors as a decorative plant because of its dramatic, jungle-like leaves.
As it matures, the leaves develop:
- Natural holes (fenestrations)
- Deep cuts and splits
- Very large leaf size (can get huge indoors too)
☀️ Light requirements
- Best: Bright indirect sunlight
- Tolerates: Medium light
- Avoid: Harsh direct afternoon sun (burns leaves)
In Gurgaon, a spot near an east-facing or filtered south-facing window works well.
💧 Watering
- Water when top 2–3 cm soil is dry
- Usually once a week in summer, less in winter
- Do NOT keep soil soggy → root rot risk
🪴 Soil
Needs a well-draining mix:
- Coco peat + perlite + potting soil
- Or any “aroid mix” (best for Monstera)
Good drainage is essential.
🌱 Growth habit
- Climbs using aerial roots
- Can be trained on a moss pole
- Can grow 1–2 feet per year in good conditions
🌡️ Temperature (important for India)
- Ideal: 18–30°C
- Very suitable for Gurgaon climate
- Protect from cold drafts below 12°C in winter
🌿 Common problems
- Yellow leaves → overwatering
- Brown tips → dry air or salt buildup
- Small leaves → low light
- No splits → plant is immature or lacks light
💡 Bonus tip
If you want large, split leaves:
- Give more bright indirect light
- Add a moss pole
- Fertilize lightly during growing season
