Pedilanthus Plant (Devil’s Backbone / Zigzag Plant)
Pedilanthus is the common name for Pedilanthus tithymaloides, a popular ornamental succulent shrub known for its distinctive zigzag stems. Botanically, it is now classified as Euphorbia tithymaloides.
Key Features
- Zigzag or “backbone-like” stems, giving rise to the name Devil’s Backbone.
- Green or variegated leaves with white, cream, or pink margins.
- Small red, slipper-shaped flowers may appear in warm conditions.
- Milky white sap that can irritate skin and is toxic if ingested.
Care Guide
Light: Bright indirect light to partial sun. Variegated varieties develop better color in brighter light.
Water: Allow the top soil to dry before watering. It is drought-tolerant and dislikes waterlogged soil.
Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
Temperature: Best between 18–30°C. Protect from frost.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
Propagation
- Easily propagated from stem cuttings.
- Allow the cut end to dry for a day before planting in well-draining soil.
Common Problems
- Yellow leaves: Usually overwatering.
- Leaf drop: Often caused by underwatering, sudden temperature changes, or low light.
- Mealybugs and spider mites: Occasional pests.
